Bus driver falls asleep at the wheel and causes multiple accidents in the

Ten people were killed and more than 30 injured after a bus crashed into several vehicles on one of the busiest highways in the northern Philippines.

The bus driver, who was arrested, said he had fallen asleep at the wheel, police told the French News Agency (AFP), adding that four children were among the victims. Buses on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac highway often transport workers between Manila and surrounding provinces.

The Ministry of Transport ordered the suspension of operations of Solid North Bus, a major bus company in the area and the company that owned the vehicle involved in the accident.

The bus driver could be charged with "reckless driving causing multiple homicide," police told AFP. The bus's driver has also been impounded. The accident involved three vehicles and a container truck, the Philippine Red Cross said in a Facebook post.

The organization said in another post that it is providing food and other aid to people hospitalized and those injured in the accident. Fatal bus accidents are not uncommon in the Philippines.

Drug use by bus drivers has also made headlines in recent weeks, although it is not clear whether it was a factor in the accident in question.

In April, several public transportation companies suspended their operations after 84 of their drivers tested positive for banned substances in their bodies.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon will meet with representatives from nearly 30 bus companies after the latest accident, according to local media. In 2023, 17 bus passengers died after the vehicle's brakes stopped working, causing it to fall into a creek.
