US moves stealth B-2 bombers as Israel-Iran conflict continues

Stealth American B-2 bombers left the US and appeared to be heading towards Diego Garcia, a strategic military base in the Indian Ocean, on Saturday.

The fighter jets used the call sign MYTEE21, which has previously been associated with stealth bomber missions. The bombers were accompanied by eight supply aircraft.

The B-2 Spirit is designed for long-range strike missions and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons.

It is the only aircraft capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, also known as a bunker buster bomb. Bunker buster bombs could be used in a potential attack on Fordow, the Iranian nuclear facility buried 90 meters inside a mountain.

It was not clear whether the bombers were heading towards Diego Garcia or a US military base in Guam.

The United States would need British permission to launch attacks from Diego Garcia, over which the United Kingdom retains sovereignty. This would not be necessary if they were deployed from the base in Guam.

On Thursday, President Trump said he would make a decision on whether to attack Iran "within the next two weeks."

In a message relayed through Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, he said: “Based on the fact that there is a significant chance that negotiations may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision on whether or not to go within the next two weeks.”

However, the deployment of B-2 bombers on Saturday suggests that the US president may be prepared to launch an attack sooner than expected. Trump said on Friday that he thought Iran would be able to develop a nuclear weapon “within a few weeks, certainly within a few months.” He added: “We cannot let that happen.”

Tulsi Gabbard, the US director of national intelligence, reversed course this week after Trump said her assessment of the nuclear situation was “wrong.” The spy chief previously testified to Congress that the US intelligence community “continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003.” On Friday, Gabbard said her testimony had been taken out of context. Israel and Iran traded further attacks overnight, with the Israeli military announcing a new wave of strikes against Iranian missile storage and launch sites.

Israel Katz, Israel’s defense minister, also said the military had killed Saeed Izadi, a veteran Iranian military commander, in a raid on an apartment in the Iranian city of Qom. Katz called the killing a “major achievement for Israeli intelligence and the air force,” adding that Izadi had financed and armed the Palestinian militant group Hamas before its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

At least 430 people have been killed and 3,500 wounded in Iran since Israel began its attacks on June 13, according to the Iranian health ministry. In Israel, 24 civilians have been killed by Iranian missile attacks.

The military action began after Israel accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons. Iran claims its atomic program is for peaceful purposes.
