Despite the war, Ukraine resumes ferry service with Georgia

Ferries operated by the Ukrainian state railway company have entered a Georgian port for the first time since the start of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022.
"Two trips were made from the port of Chornomorsk to the port of Batumi on March 18 and 26," said Timofei Murakhovsky, head of logistics at Ukrainian State Railways, according to a report by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
A third trip is planned for next week. The first two trips were made in complete secrecy.
Ferry services to Georgia were suspended following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A resumption of service was announced last summer but did not materialize.
The goal is to bring some Chinese goods to Europe through Ukraine, through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia, bypassing Russia.
Cargo ships have returned to three Ukrainian Black Sea ports in the greater Odessa area since the Russian Black Sea fleet was forced to leave.
Since 2023, ships have followed a designated corridor from Kiev. The Ukrainian government says the volume of goods handled has returned to pre-war levels.
