Pope Leo XIV opens Instagram! In 24 hours, he counts 12 million followers

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis, succeeds Pope Francis, who died during the Easter holiday. He was elected in a conclave by 133 cardinals under the age of 80 and is the first American to bear the papal name. Born in 1955, Pope Leo turns 70 this year.
He graduated in mathematics from Villanova University and then studied theology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. His academic training was complemented by a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
He has spent most of his life as a priest outside the United States, particularly in Peru, where he served as a missionary since 1985. During that period, he has held various roles: from pastor and professor, to monastery leader and judicial official in the church.
He is one of the few American clerics with extensive experience in Latin America, an aspect that makes him a 'bridge' figure between the two continents. In addition to his native language, English, Pope Leo is fluent in Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, and has good skills in Latin and German.
