NATO lands in Greenland: Europe strengthens presence in the Arctic

Military personnel from several European countries have arrived in Greenland, after a meeting between American, Danish and Greenlandic officials in Washington to resolve recent disputes over the administration and security of the Arctic island failed.

France, Sweden, Germany and Norway confirmed the deployment of troops to Nuuk as part of a reconnaissance and assessment mission. The move is seen as a response to rising geopolitical tensions in the Arctic, where the military and economic interests of major powers are clashing.

The German Defense Ministry announced that the mission aims to examine ways to support Greenland's security, in the face of what it calls an increased threat climate from Russia and China in the region. Germany has sent a team of 13 Bundeswehr troops, at the invitation of Denmark.

At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris will increase its involvement with land, air and naval forces in the exercises and missions taking place in the Arctic territory.

Other allied countries are also joining the operation: The Netherlands and Estonia confirmed they will take part in the coordinated exercise, which Dutch Foreign Minister Ruben Brekelmans described as a clear message that Greenland's security
