An investigation by independent Russian media has revealed that Michael Alexander Gloss, 21, the son of CIA Deputy Director for Digital Innovation Juliane Gallina, was killed in Ukraine in April this year while fighting alongside Russian forces as a mercenary.

The event occurred on April 4, 2024, but has only been made public now.

According to a report by the investigative website iStories, Gloss was recruited into the Russian army's assault units, which are involved in the most intense fighting on the front lines.

He is believed to have been deployed with an air regiment carrying out strikes near the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine.

Gloss, born and raised in a military family in Virginia, was a former college football player and well-known activist for environmental issues and gender equality.

He had participated in humanitarian efforts in Turkey after the 2023 earthquake and was a member of the left-wing environmental group "Rainbow Family".

On social media, he had expressed strong stances against fascism and publicly supported Russia and Palestine.

It is reported that his disillusionment with American foreign policy, particularly support for Israel, influenced his decision to leave and eventually join the Russian military.

The obituary published by his family describes him as a "fighting spirit and noble heart" who was "building his hero's journey" when he lost his life.

The circumstances of his involvement in the Russian conflict in Ukraine remain unclear, while his death is raising new questions about the propensity of Western youth to become involved in foreign conflicts.
