Lavrov: Macron and Starmer are seeking sanctions, not peace

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized the West's approach to a possible ceasefire with Ukraine, saying it will no longer work.
He stressed that, despite calls from French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for increased anti-Russian sanctions, Russia is against such a solution that says 'we'll see later.'
In a speech at the Russian-Armenian University, Lavrov mentioned meetings held in Istanbul in 2022, where Russia and Ukraine agreed on some possible principles of a settlement.
According to him, the West has blocked the signing of a treaty based on these principles, rendering any discussion of a ceasefire ineffective.
" We do not want to be involved in this process anymore, " Lavrov stressed, accusing European figures such as Macron and Von der Leyen of hysterical demands to strengthen sanctions against Russia.
Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine resumed in Istanbul on May 16, where the sides agreed to exchange prisoners and discuss a plan for a possible ceasefire.
Russia and Ukraine also committed to presenting their visions for a possible peace agreement.
