Kim Jong-un wins North Korean election, gets 99.3% of vote

The ruling party of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has declared a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, taking almost 100% of the vote.

According to state media, 687 deputies have been elected to the People's Assembly, all from the ruling Workers' Party.

Voters had no real choice, as only one candidate selected by the party was running in each precinct. Citizens were simply asked to approve or reject the name on the ballot. Official turnout was reported at 99.9%, according to the state news agency KCNA.

According to the constitution, elections must be held every five years, but these were postponed to coincide with the Workers' Party congress. Previously, elections have only been postponed twice: during the Korean War and after the death of Kim Il Sung in 1994.

For the first time, voters had the opportunity to reject a candidate in the 2023 local elections. In these elections, about 0.7% voted against, an increase from 0.1% previously, but still a very low level of opposition.

The new assembly will meet on March 22 to review the five-year plan, which includes expanding the nuclear arsenal and developing long-range missiles.

Meanwhile, the leader's sister, Kim Yo-jong, has been promoted to an important post in the party and is considered one of the most powerful figures in the country.

She is also seen as a potential interim leader until Kim's daughter, Kim Ju-ae, considered the successor, takes over.
