EC calls for boycott of May 9 in Moscow! Vučić does not give up on Putin, nor on the EU

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has again announced that he will take part in the demonstration in Moscow on May 9, despite the European Commission's call for a boycott by candidate countries due to the large-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine.

In a statement to Serbian media, Vučić said today that Serbia will not abandon its European path, but he will participate in the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow.

" The main and only problem is whether I will go to Moscow. Serbia is on the European path and will not retreat from it. I am ready to accept any kind of sanctions. I told Putin that I will come to Russia on May 9. No one else should go and suffer. I will go, unless I don't know what is happening or I don't know what threat is being directed at Serbia ," Vučić declared.

EC spokeswoman Paula Pinho has previously stated that the Victory Day celebration in Moscow is part of Russian propaganda and an attempt to justify the invasion of Ukraine, so EU members and candidate countries should refrain from participating.

"We see the celebration of May 9 as part of Russian propaganda and an attempt to justify its invasion of Ukraine and for this reason we believe that we must refrain from giving legitimacy in any way to this war and refrain from participating in that celebration ," she said at a press conference in Brussels.

The official added that this applies not only to candidate countries, but even more so to EU members who agreed on such a position in 2022. Meanwhile, Enlargement Spokesperson Guillaume Mercier said that Serbia must confirm its strategic direction.

" The EU has been clear with our partners, including candidate countries like Serbia, that relations with Russia cannot be business as usual, " Mercier said.

Asked whether there will be consequences for Serbia, he said it is too early to speculate on this point. In addition to Vučić, the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, will also participate in the May 9 demonstration in Moscow.
