Germany fines activist who was stabbed by Islamist refugee for 'inciting hatred'

German social activist Michael Stürzenberger, a critic of Islamic social policies, was fined €3,600 yesterday for incitement and provocation by a court in Hamburg, months after he was almost fatally stabbed by an Afghan Islamist.
Stürzenberger confirmed the verdict on his social media account.
The activist for almost a decade expresses his alarm about the phenomenon called 'Political Islam', and the effects it has on European countries where thousands of Muslim refugees are immigrating.
Stürzenberger leads the Pax Europa movement, with the mission of informing the public about the danger of "political Islam" to the democratic societies of Germany and Europe, writes the Belgian network BrusselSignal.
On May 31, 2024, during a public event in Mannheim, Stürzenberger was attacked with a knife by Afghan immigrant Suleiman Atae.
He was stabbed several times and had to undergo emergency surgery. The attacker also hit several other people at the scene, including a policeman who was shot by Ataee in the neck and head. Officer Rouven Laur, tragically died from his injuries.
Prosecutors later said the attacker had sympathies for Islamic State, while Ataee's neighbors said he called for a Muslim caliphate in Germany.
The killer is still awaiting trial.
Stürzenberger is now out of the hospital but still has the effects of the horrific attack.
Hamburg judges already say that Stürzenberger spoke ill of refugees and Muslims at a protest in October 2020, sentencing him to prison later converted to a fine.
The Hamburg verdict has been met with criticism by many commentators, among them local MP Dieter Arnold, of the ruling Alternative for Germany (AfD) group in Bavaria, who called the verdict "a disaster for the German justice system".
The prosecution had focused on six points mentioned by him which they said included 'incitement to hatred.'
Stürzenberger had said that many Muslims coming to Germany are not politically persecuted as the government claims, and also said that "many criminals in Germany are Muslims from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and North Africa". Another comment disputed by the prosecutors was that "the program of political Islam is to put women under control".
Stürzenberger told the German network 'Deutschland Kurier' at the beginning of the month that at the protest he and his colleagues informed those present about "political Islam".
"We were making clear distinctions between 'political Islam' and normal Muslims who have the same democratic values as us and we value them very much ," he said.
