United Arab Emirates makes ChatGPT Plus subscription free for all citizens

In a new move, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first country in the world to offer free access to ChatGPT Plus, the premium version of OpenAI's popular artificial intelligence chatbot, to its entire population, writes the website businesstoday.in.
This initiative is part of a larger strategic partnership between OpenAI and the government of the United Arab Emirates.
The collaboration also includes the development of a large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure project in Abu Dhabi, called ''Stargate UAE'', which aims to become a central hub for artificial intelligence in the region.
The facility will house a one-gigawatt artificial intelligence supercomputer cluster, with a planned initial capacity of 200 megawatts by next year.
The project is part of OpenAI's broader "OpenAI for Countries" program, designed to help nations build artificial intelligence systems tailored to their local languages, governance structures, and societal needs.
The initiative also focuses on ensuring data privacy, responsible use of artificial intelligence, and compliance with national policies.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the UAE project as a "bold vision" that aims to bring the benefits of AI, such as advances in healthcare, education and energy, to more parts of the world.
The partnership includes several major global technology companies, including Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, SoftBank, Microsoft and G42, a UAE-based AI company backed by Microsoft.
The goal is for the UAE to become a key player in the global AI landscape.
What makes this development particularly important is that every resident of the UAE will now have free access to ChatGPT Plus.
This will give millions of people access to OpenAI's most advanced tools for tasks such as writing, researching, coding, and planning.
Additionally, the UAE has pledged to match its domestic investment in AI with equivalent investment in the United States. According to a report by Axios, the total spending could reach $20 billion, split between the Gulf countries and the United States.
Looking ahead, OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, is expected to visit countries in the Asia-Pacific region to explore similar partnerships.
The company has indicated that the UAE is just the first step in its vision to help more countries develop their artificial intelligence infrastructure and capabilities.
