Migrants to Europe/ Over 3,500 people from the East and Africa lost their lives

More than 3,500 people lost their lives or went missing trying to cross the sea to Europe during 2024.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, in its report, highlights the main developments and gaps in the rights landscape in the Union over the past year, with migration remaining a key concern.

Despite new European Union rules on asylum and migration, the agency says that violations of rights at borders continued and the lack of adequate search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean continues to put lives at risk.

Last year, 3,642 people died or went missing while trying to reach the old continent by sea, a slight decrease from 4,088 in 2023.

The report also criticizes ineffective investigations into border abuses and calls for stronger monitoring mechanisms, better conditions for newcomers, and support for civil society actors engaged in search and rescue, who often face criminalization.

The European Union agency also raised the alarm about the rise in racism, anti-Semitism and hatred against Muslims in the union's countries, noting that nearly half of Muslims in Europe experience racial discrimination.
