Italy's referendum on citizenship fails, Meloni's party celebrates: The goal was to overthrow the government! The initiators admit defeat

A referendum in Italy aimed at easing citizenship laws and improving workplace protections failed Monday due to low voter turnout, preliminary results showed.
The result constitutes a clear defeat for the center-left opposition and a victory for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing ruling coalition, who had publicly called for a boycott of the vote.
According to official data from nearly 90% of polling stations, turnout was recorded at around 30% of eligible voters, well below the required threshold of 50% plus one, which is needed to declare a referendum valid.
Giorgia Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party welcomed the referendum's failure.
“The only real purpose of this referendum was to overthrow the Meloni government,” the party wrote on social media, sharing a photo of the main opposition leaders. “In the end, it was the Italians themselves who brought you down.”
Meanwhile, Maurizio Landini, head of the CGIL union, which was behind the initiative, admitted defeat.
