EU makes pact for migrants: They will be redistributed or the list of safe

European Union interior ministers agreed to simplify the rejection of asylum applications and to draw up a common list of "safe countries of origin".

The agreement also provides for internal relocation of asylum seekers within the EU and financial contributions from member states.

According to the agreement reached in Brussels, around 21,000 asylum seekers will be relocated to other EU countries to reduce pressure on countries facing high migratory flows.

In parallel, countries less affected by migration will contribute financially with around 420 million euros within the framework of the solidarity mechanism.

The specific distribution of contributions for each country, including Germany, has not yet been determined.

One of the main changes relates to the unification of repatriation procedures across the European Union. These measures include pre-deportation detention, re-entry bans and stricter rules on the cooperation of those who need to be removed with the responsible authorities.

In the European Commission's assessment, Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy are expected to benefit from the solidarity mechanism over the next year, due to high migratory pressure. Some countries, including Germany, may request an exemption from the relocation obligation, based on the European Commission's guidelines.

Under the new rules, countries such as Sweden, Portugal, Hungary, Romania and Luxembourg are expected to contribute either through accepting migrants or through other forms of solidarity.

For the first time, the EU has adopted a common list of safe countries of origin.

This list includes Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, India, Kosovo, Bangladesh and Colombia. Accelerated procedures will be applied to asylum seekers from these countries, including the examination of applications at the border or in transit zones.

Now, EU member states and the European Parliament will have to agree on the final legal text of the agreement.
