Ukraine's army chief psychiatrist arrested for illegal enrichment, had

Ukraine has arrested the army's chief psychiatrist on charges of "illegal enrichment" in connection with profits of more than $1 million, accumulated since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

In a statement, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said he was part of a commission that decided whether individuals were suitable for military service.

The SBU statement does not mention his name - however, a person named Oleh Druz had previously been identified as the chief psychiatrist of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The SBU said he owned three apartments in or near Kiev, one in Odessa, two plots of land and several luxury BMW cars, and investigators who searched his home also found $152,000 and 34,000 euros in cash.

The statement states that the person did not declare the property, which was registered in the name of his wife, daughter, sons and other third parties.

He now faces ten years in prison on charges of illicit enrichment and false declaration.

Druz was implicated in a similar case in 2017, where he failed to declare two SUVs and several properties, leading to his suspension from office.

Ukraine has long struggled with endemic corruption.

In May, a Ukrainian MP was accused of embezzling £220,000, while in 2023 more than 30 recruitment officers, accused of taking bribes and smuggling people out of the country, were fired in an anti-corruption purge.

Last year, the Ukrainian parliament voted to abolish military medical commissions after several officials were accused of taking bribes in exchange for granting exemptions from military service./ BBC
