The Illyrian settlement in Korçë is discovered, what archaeologists discovered at the Barçi Castle

A new archaeological center is added to the rich cultural and archaeological heritage of the Korça area. The latest research of the Albanian-French team has brought to light the first archaeological evidence of a hill settlement above the village of Barç, known by the locals as "Barç Castle".
" From the excavations, we have understood that the settlement began in the Iron Age, approximately around the 8th century BC, and was used continuously until the Illyrian civil period. We have different structures, one such is the four-cornered site which could be a tower of the Illyrian civic period since the position where the site is located is a dominant position in the landscape. This year we discovered a perimeter wall which surrounds the upper terrace of the site. We are dealing with a more complex site than we thought at the beginning ", said Rovena Kurti Ruka, Co-Director of the project.
The researches have revealed architectural traces of different periods, indicative of continuous habitation in this place during the Iron Age and the Illyrian Civil Age, about 2800 years ago.
" These new discoveries and future research will give us more important data on the settlement during the late prehistoric period ," said Rovena Kurti Ruka.
The researchers engaged in the project will bring data from different aspects of the life of the community located in this settlement, which offers another tourist potential for the region of Korça and beyond.
