Dritan Gjika, head of the Albanian mafia in Ecuador, arrested in Abu Dhabi
Dritan Gjika, also known as the head of the Albanian mafia in Ecuador, has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates.

The news was announced by the Ecuadorian Interior Ministry, which, through a post on X, says that Gjika's arrest was made during an international operation conducted today (May 26).

He was internationally wanted by Interpol for drug trafficking, money laundering and organized crime.

According to Ecuadorian authorities, the 47-year-old Albanian ran a criminal organization that operated in Ecuador and Spain, sending large quantities of drugs to Central America and Europe.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that "Dritan Gjika has become one of the most wanted men in the country" for drug trafficking, money laundering and organized crime operations.

In February 2024, the Ecuadorian Attorney General's Office named him the leader of Albanian mafia operations in the country, but he could not be tried because he was a fugitive.

In January of this year, an Ecuadorian anti-corruption court sentenced eight people to approximately 17 years in prison. They were part of a criminal organization linked to the Albanian mafia.
