Union Berlin makes history; Marie Louis-Eta, the first female coach in the Bundesliga in men's football

Union Berlin has made German football history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as the first female coach of the men's team in the Bundesliga, with the aim of securing their place in the German football elite.
The 34-year-old coach replaces the sacked Steffen Baumgart along with his assistants Danilo De Souza and Kevin McKenna after the 3-1 defeat at Heidenheim, the last-placed team in the standings.
The official announcement came shortly after midnight. Eta, who had previously managed the U19 men's team, was appointed earlier this month as the club's next women's coach starting next season. She will now have five games available to keep Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. Marie-Louise Eta had previously set a record in 2023 when she became the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga in all five major European championships. In 2024, she temporarily replaced coach Nenad Bjelica in media activities during a period of suspension.
"It is a pleasure that Marie-Louise Eta has accepted this temporary role before taking over the management of the girls' team in the summer," said the club's sporting director Horst Heldt.
Baumgart, a former Union Berlin player, was appointed to the team's bench during the winter break in the 2024-25 season, but the results of recent matches prompted the club's leaders to make this drastic change.
"The second phase of the championship was completely disappointing and the classification should not lie, our situation remains delicate and we urgently need points to stay in the Bundesliga," explained Heldt.
The loss to Heidenheim has left Union Berlin in 11th place in an 18-team standings, just 7 points ahead of St. Pauli, who are currently in the relegation zone, with 5 games remaining.
"Two wins in 14 games after the winter break and recent performances do not give us confidence in a change of situation with the current staff. For this reason we decided to start over," added Heldt.
Union Berlin's next match is against Wolfsburg, a team also involved in the fight for survival in the Bundesliga.
