Football in mourning! El Loco, the legend of the Argentine goal, passes away

The great Argentine goalkeeper Hugo Gatti has died at the age of 80, the national federation AFA and the South American confederation CONMEBOL said today.

Local news reports said Gatti broke his hip in a fall two months ago.

In the hospital he contracted pneumonia, suffered kidney problems and died from multiple organ failure.

Gatti's career spanned 25 years, and his charisma and playing style earned him the nickname El Loco (The Crazy One).

"La Nacion" said he believed people should experience more than one result in the stadium.

Gatti played 765 games in the Argentine championship, which is still a record, and had his greatest success during his 1976-1988 tenure at Boca Juniors, winning the Copa Libertadores twice and the Intercontinental Cup.

Gatti made 18 appearances for Argentina and was part of the squad for the 1966 World Cup in England.

"His unmistakable style has lasted for generations and has made him one of the best goalkeepers in Argentine football ," CONMEBOL said.
