Alarm for the 2026 World Cup, scientists warn FIFA: Extreme temperatures could

FIFA has come under pressure from a group of international scientists and experts who warn that high temperatures during the 2026 World Cup could seriously endanger the health of footballers.

In a recently published letter, 20 experts from the fields of health, climate and sports performance criticize FIFA's current measures, calling them "insufficient" and not in line with the latest scientific standards.

According to them, the tournament that will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico could take place in extremely hot conditions, especially in the southern US and northern Mexico, where temperatures could approach 40 degrees Celsius.

Experts point out that the combination of high temperature, humidity and solar radiation significantly increases the risk of heat stress for players.

They demand that FIFA urgently intervene with stronger protective measures.

Currently, FIFA has stipulated three-minute refreshment breaks during each half of matches, as well as climate-controlled benches for staff and substitutes.

The WBGT system is also used, which measures the level of heat stress in the body.

However, scientists are calling for stricter rules, proposing the postponement of matches when the WBGT level exceeds 28°C, longer breaks of at least six minutes, and more modern cooling equipment for footballers.

They also call on FIFA to adopt the standards proposed by FIFPRO, warning that climate change is creating serious new challenges for modern football.
