'Urbi et Orbi'/ Pope calls on world leaders: Lay down your arms, choose peace!

On Easter Sunday, Pope Leo calls on world leaders to choose “not to dominate others and to confront domination.” He also announces that he will lead a prayer vigil for peace next Saturday, April 11, in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Leo XIV has called on world leaders to lay down their arms and choose "confrontation" over domination.
"Let those who have weapons lay down their weapons!" the Pope called on Easter Sunday in his traditional Urbi et Orbi ('To the City and the World') message.
Speaking to tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo called on "those who have the power to start wars" to choose peace.
This should not be a peace "imposed by force", he stressed, but a peace achieved through dialogue – "not with the desire to dominate others, but to confront them".
'Globalization of indifference'
Pope Leo warned that the world is "getting used to violence."
We are “becoming indifferent,” he said, not only to the deaths of thousands of people, but also to the causes of the war “of hatred and division,” as well as “its economic and social consequences.”
Borrowing a phrase from the late Pope Francis, Pope Leo warned of the “ever-increasing globalization of indifference.”
"We cannot continue to be indifferent!" he urged. "We cannot give in to evil!"
For this reason, he said, I will lead a prayer vigil for peace next Saturday, April 11, in St. Peter's Basilica.
Non-violence and 'true strength'
At Easter, the Pope said, Jesus triumphed over death and in this way "defeated once and for all the ancient adversary, the prince of this world."
However, Pope Leo emphasized, the power with which Christ won this victory is "entirely non-violent," based on a love that "creates and generates," "forgives and gives justice."
This spirit of love and forgiveness, he said, is the "true force" that establishes peace and fosters relationships between individuals and societies.
Inner peace
Closing his Urbi et Orbi message, the Pope emphasized that the peace of Easter is not simply the "silence of weapons", but also an inner peace that "touches and transforms the heart of each of us".
"Let us allow ourselves to be transformed by the peace of Christ," Pope Leo urged, entrusting to God "all hearts that suffer and await the true peace that only He can give."/ Vatican News.
