Trump confirms blockade of Iranian ports
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States will create a blockade that prevents ships from entering and leaving Iranian ports.
According to him, the blockade will be operational on April 13, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
Announcing the blockade, US Central Command, which is responsible for all US military forces in the Middle East, said the blockade would apply to ships of all countries "without distinction", preventing them from entering or leaving Iranian ports and sea lanes in the "Arabian Gulf" - also known as the Persian Gulf - and the Gulf of Oman.
Central Command has not provided further details about the blockade, including how many American ships will be involved, but only that it will apply to ships intending to enter and exit Iran.
Since the start of the conflict between the United States and Israel, on the one hand, and Iran, on the other, Tehran has blocked all maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to a sharp increase in energy prices.
Iran has also announced that it will begin imposing taxes on ships attempting to pass through the strait, which is vital to global oil supplies.
The announcement from the US came after the failure of talks with the Iranian side to end the war that began on February 28.
US Vice President JD Vance led the US delegation in negotiations that lasted over 21 hours in Islamabad, Pakistan.
"The bad news is that we didn't reach an agreement. I think that's worse news for Iran than it is bad news for the United States," he told reporters shortly after the meeting.
Iran's nuclear ambitions are believed to have dominated the talks, although Vance said other major issues were also on the agenda, including the asset freeze and broader tensions in the Middle East./REL
