Tragedy in Lampedusa, 20 missing after the shipwreck with migrants

Twenty migrants are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, seven people were rescued, including a 7-year-old Syrian child.

The seven-year-old lost his mother and will move to Germany, where his father immigrated.

The Italian Coast Guard is carrying out an operation to find the missing, among whom are five women and three children.

The boat was launched from the coast of Libya and the seven rescued people are citizens of Syria, Sudan and Egypt.

The mayor of Lampedusa, Filippo Mannino, expressed "the hope that this tragedy will be the last", according to ANSA, amid the New Year celebrations.

In 2024, more than 2,000 migrants died or were reported missing while crossing the central Mediterranean, the world's most dangerous migration route.
