Diaspora Summit and protest for the Albanian language by students in North

The protest against the Albanian language in the jurisprudence exam by Albanian students in North Macedonia became a subject of discussion and concern at the 4th Albanian Diaspora Summit on Tuesday in Tirana.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Europe, Ferit Hoxha, spoke about this topic first. Then the Prime Minister, and Ali Ahmeti and Dritan Abazovic did not stop talking. But I did not see this topic as worrying for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo, Glauck Konjufca, nor for the head of the parliament of North Macedonia, Afrim Gashi. The latter even asked not to politicize the issue of the use of the Albanian language in this country, while Ali Ahmeti “was concerned” that efforts are being made to invalidate the Ohrid Agreement of August 2001.

It has been 25 years since the Ohrid Agreement was signed, which ended the civil war in Macedonia. During this time, Ali Ahmeti has been in power for 22 years. However, he did not finally resolve the issue of the use of the Albanian language in the Macedonian administration and institutional activities. Now he comes out and sounds the alarm that the agreement in question is being contested. This makes me believe that someone is fanning the conflict between Albanians and Macedonians in North Macedonia. Who is this someone? The answer to this question was given at this very diaspora summit by the former pro-Serbian Prime Minister of Montenegro, but with the Albanian name Dritan and the mixed Albanian-Serbian surname, Abazovic.

Dritan Abazovic called for the protection of the Albanian language. So he urged the persecuted party, the Albanian students of North Macedonia, to intensify the fight “for the Albanian language and its use in jurisprudence exams”! That students and citizens of Albanian nationality must fight for their rights, not only cultural and linguistic, but also constitutional, political, administrative and representational, this is an inalienable right. But without being influenced by Ali Ahmeti, who had every opportunity to impose a comprehensive and complete agreement in the spring-summer of 2001, without dilemmas and consequences for the future. He even had the opportunity to impose constitutional changes with which the Albanian deputies had to vote with 2/3 for the amendment of the Constitution. But he did not do this. Out of ignorance, out of inability or intentionally, let this be part of his conscience. However, Ali Ahmeti has a duty to apologize before speaking out and inciting further conflicts in North Macedonia.

While Dritan Abazovic's recommendation seems to me like a message from Aleksandar Vučić. That's why I said that I already understood the answer to why someone wants an Albanian-Macedonian conflict from what the accidental former Prime Minister of Montenegro says. Actually, not so accidental, if we consider that Abazovic restored the Serbian Orthodox Church in Cetinje, or if we consider that he was ready to enter the Open Balkans of Aleksandar Vučić and Edi Rama, if the President of the Republic at the time, Milo Đukanović, would allow it. In short, it seems that Serbia is trying to exploit this delicate moment in relations between Albanians and Macedonians with the aim of disintegrating this state.

We must bear in mind that in the West there is a widespread narrative according to which “Albanians in North Macedonia will not accept to stay in the same country as Macedonians”! A very well-known journalist from Spiegel told me a few years ago that if you talk to Albanians in Macedonia, only the first 5 minutes they talk about coexistence, tolerance and then they forget and speak harshly against Macedonians. In fact, she was wrong when she said “Macedonians”! Albanians in North Macedonia speak out against the discriminatory policies of the Macedonian elite towards them. This is known.

However, it is in the interest of Albanians wherever they live, for the state of Macedonia to exist. Even to be strengthened and integrated into the European Union, in addition to NATO. Meanwhile, the Albanians of North Macedonia have all the opportunities and skills to advance their rights and even impose constitutional changes for these rights, but without provoking violence or federalism or the dissolution of the state. Being equal in a common state is in the interest of the Albanians. While the Serbs have an interest in the dissolution of this state and its dissolution! And a part of the Macedonian elite wants to realize the Serbian narrative. Therefore, care must be taken, as the saying goes: – Let the meat cook and the skewer not burn!
