A Turkish court yesterday, Monday, ordered the arrest of a woman on charges of inciting hatred and insulting the president after she criticized the ban imposed on the social networking platform Instagram.

Turkey blocked access to Instagram on August 2, claiming that the social media site does not comply with Turkish "laws and regulations" and the sensitivities of Turkish public opinion.

The ban was lifted on Saturday after it was announced that the media outlet, which is owned by Meta Platforms, had agreed to cooperate with authorities to address the government's concerns.

In an interview posted on a YouTube channel last week, when Instagram was still blocked, a woman identified as Dilbura Y. was one of several passers-by asked what they thought of the ban.

The young woman said, according to local media: " If we leave the country in the hands of a single man, he will use it as if it were his father's property ."

In her interview, the young woman said about people who support banning Instagram and killing stray dogs: " You are idiots. You are handing over all the rights of your freedom to a single person" .

Yesterday's arrest, which was ordered by a local court in Izmir, came after the head of Turkey's RTUK broadcasting board criticized street interviews published on social media, claiming they "manipulate public opinion".

The Instagram ban was imposed after a senior Turkish official accused the social network of blocking posts expressing condolences for the killing of Ismail Haniya, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

At the same time, the Chamber of Advocates of Smyrna has issued a written statement reacting to the arrest of the young woman.

" We want an independent judiciary" , said the Chamber of Advocates in its statement.

" The government does not tolerate criticism. Freedom of expression is being taken away and illegal punishments continue to exist under a one-man regime... A new one was added to the "arrest" orders issued as a form of punishment without trial today. Today, a person in Izmir was arrested just after expressing his thoughts in a street interview. Immediately put an end to disproportionate, illegal arrests and "detentions" designed to silence and intimidate members of society. Enforce the law!'
