After meeting with Erdoğan's political opponent, Council of Europe demands

The Council of Europe is "demanding" the "immediate" release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu after his delegation met with Tayyip Erdogan's imprisoned political opponent.

“After an in-depth exchange of views with, we remain convinced that it is unacceptable in a state governed by the rule of law for Istanbul to deprive the mayor of his liberty by detaining him without trial or charge, and we reiterate our call for his immediate release,” the Council of Europe delegation said in a statement after the meeting at Silivri prison.

The arrest of local government officials and municipal officials, as well as their replacement without due process or an evidence-based trial, violates fundamental democratic principles.

"Accusations of terrorism cannot in any way justify the replacement of mayors by government governors. These measures de facto ignore the will of citizens expressed at the ballot boxes," the statement denounces.

The delegation is “concerned” “about the violation of the fundamental freedoms of demonstrators that occurred following the demonstrations sparked by the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul.”

The arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, who was nominated as the candidate of Turkey's largest opposition party, CHP, for the 2028 presidential elections, on the day of his imprisonment, triggered a wider wave of protests and anger in the country that has been governed since 2002 by Erdogan and his party (AKP).
