Pope donates 200,000 euros from his account to prisoners before his death

The thread that connected Pope Francis with prisoners spoke the language of authenticity and compassion. Monsignor Benoni Ambarus, the bishop delegated for charity and prisons, who over the years has shared with the Pope his devotion to prisoners, has recounted details of this connection.
" A few days before he died, Francesco crawled into the Regina Coeli prison. He no longer had the strength, but with his presence he wanted to shout to the world that we cannot abandon those who live behind bars ," he said.
And then he adds: " His wealth? He donated to them: 200 thousand euros, from his personal account. When I asked him for financial help, he told me that he had no more funds, but that he would find something in his account. And so he did ," says Ambarus.
The connection with the prisoners was alive, daily, even in the most difficult moments. "When we talked about prisons, I saw him suffering, his heart sank". He washed the prisoners' feet, opened for them the Holy Door of Rebibbia, the second after that of St. Peter's, and asked for a concrete gesture: a reduction in sentence, even if symbolic, for one or two months. But nothing came of it" - he said.
"One prisoner told me that no one had ever visited him. It hurt me. Many walk barefoot because they don't have shoes. The state provides food, but not the rest. We must remember that they are brothers and sisters, not locked up ghosts," Ambraus said.
