Ukraine's EU entry, Hungary in referendum. Orban: People decide if they are

Hungary's government will hold a referendum on whether Ukraine should be allowed to join the European Union, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told reporters after a European Council meeting in Brussels.

"I think we should seriously address the issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU. It is impossible to make a responsible decision on this point and I do not want this decision to be made behind the backs of the people. That is why I came to the conclusion that we should hold a referendum on the topic of Ukraine's membership in the European Union," he said.

"We need to know whether our people are ready to sacrifice their interests for the sake of Ukraine's membership," Orban added.

Previously, Orban has repeatedly said that at this point, Ukraine's EU membership would cause irreparable damage to Europe's agriculture and the economy in general. In addition, the Ukrainian government failed to respect the rights of the Hungarian minority on its territory and continued its actions that threatened Hungary's energy security.

At the same time, Orban does not rule out the possibility of Ukraine's eventual accession to the EU, if it meets all the requirements of a candidate and fulfills all the prerequisites.
