Greece has experienced an extremely difficult 24 hours due to the severe weather "Erminio", which hit many areas of the country with particular severity. In addition to the Attica basin which was severely affected, islands such as Rhodes, Poros and Sikinos experienced the intense consequences of the severe weather which caused torrential rains and flooding.
The island of Rhodes was hit by gale-force southerly winds reaching up to 110 kilometres per hour. At the same time, as reported by ERT, waves in the port exceeded 3 metres. The torrential waters flooded the Municipal Units of Embona and Mandriko, while in many areas trees were downed and material damage was recorded.
Residents of Rhodes have been asked to limit their movements since Wednesday evening, as the situation worsened.
At Diagoras Airport, strong winds caused dozens of flights to be cancelled, with at least 10 charter planes diverting to other destinations, including Kos and Antalya in Turkey. At the same time, ships were stranded due to dangerous winds.
By decision of the regional governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hadjimarkos, the operation of all school units, of all educational levels, throughout the territory of the Cyclades and Dodecanese was suspended for Thursday, April 2, for the preventive protection of public safety.
Even in Poros, the weather situation was extremely difficult. Flooding was recorded in the area, while two vehicles were swept away by the rushing waters.
A small bridge collapsed, while in the Askeli area, cars were flooded into the sea. The Fire Department carried out an operation to extract two elderly people, as well as to drain the water from flooded houses.
In Sikinos, basements and streets near the port were flooded, while similar images were recorded in other areas of the Aegean, such as Hydra and Kimolos.
The waves reached the urban structure, causing damage to coastal areas and serious disruption to the daily lives of residents. According to kosnews24.gr, the intense bad weather also caused the sinking of a ship in the port of Kos.
