Belgium imports more Russian gas than before the war in Ukraine

Belgium has increased its imports of Russian natural gas to levels not seen since before the war in Ukraine, according to Federal Economic Service data cited by local media on Friday.

Figures show that Russian gas accounted for 11.6 percent of total gas consumption in Belgium last year, marking the highest share since 2019, according to Belgian newspapers L'Echo and De Tijd.

The increase comes despite the European Union's efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy after the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.

While Russian gas deliveries via pipelines have stopped, imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) via sea transport have increased significantly. Most of this supply comes through the Fluxys terminal in Zeebrugge, which recorded 17.6 terawatt-hours of Russian-origin LNG last year — more than the combined total of the previous four years.

The EU decided to phase out all imports of Russian gas and LNG by the end of 2027, following a vote in the European Council, reinforcing a historic policy aimed at breaking away from what was once the bloc's main gas supplier.
