EU calls on Israel to avoid further escalation of conflict with Lebanon

The foreign ministers of 10 European countries have issued a joint statement calling on Israel to avoid "further escalation" of the conflict in Lebanon - urging it to respect the country's "territorial integrity", according to the BBC.
The statement condemns Hezbollah's attacks on Israel in support of Iran, supports and encourages the Lebanese government to restore its sovereignty over all of Lebanon.
It calls for direct political negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, saying all parties must immediately reduce tensions.
Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas have signed the joint statement.
Israel sent ground troops into southern Lebanon on March 2 and has also launched widespread attacks across the country.
He said he is trying to protect communities from attacks by Hezbollah, which is an armed group backed by Iran.
