Iranian activist is sentenced to death, human rights revolts erupt

Iranian-Kurdish activist Pakhshan Azizi was sentenced to death, prompting a backlash from people on social media and human rights organizations. In these reactions, the Islamic Republic is accused of brutal retaliation against women activists.
This is the second death sentence for a political prisoner in Iran in recent weeks. Sharifeh Mohammadi, an activist for workers' rights, was sentenced to death by the Islamic Revolutionary Court, also on charges of sedition.
" I can't believe it... Pakhshan Aziz's brother announced that Pakhshan has been sentenced to death, I can't believe it, this is a nightmare, " Atefeh Nabavi, an activist and former political prisoner, wrote on the X social network.
The Kurdish Human Rights Organization 'Hengaw' emphasized that Ms. Azizi was sentenced to death after "she was denied the right to get a lawyer and family visits for several months. Her legal procedures were conducted in a non-transparent and unfair manner."
The Hengaw organization recently published a letter from Ms Azizi in which she said she had been tortured.
" They are retaliating against the activists in the most brutal way ," said Fatemeh Shahrazad Shams, an activist for women's rights. " Continuous executions, long-term imprisonments, deportations and infection of female prisoners with suspicious diseases are ongoing crimes committed by the Islamic Republic against women. We must not remain silent in the face of these brutal injustices ."
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network announced that " Mrs. Azizi's death sentence coincides with the case of another Kurdish activist, Wrisha Moradi, a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women's Association (KJAR), who is awaiting sentence for similar charges after her arrest in Sanandaj, Kurdistan Province ".
Ms. Azizi was arrested on August 4, 2023, by the Ministry of Intelligence in Kharazi, a suburb of Tehran. She was interrogated and tortured at the Intelligence Detention Center before being transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison and then to the women's ward. She was later accused of "rebellion through membership in opposition groups".
Ms. Azizi appeared before one of the branches of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran on May 28 and then on June 16, 2024, to answer the charge of sedition.
Previously, Ms. Azizi wrote a letter titled "Hiding the truth and its alternative," which was obtained by the Hengaw organization and published on July 21. This happened just two days before her death sentence was announced. In the letter, she describes in detail her experiences of arrest and torture by security agencies.
Ms. Azizi was first arrested in November 2009 during a student protest against political executions in Kurdistan. She was subsequently released on bail on payment of approximately $2,400 on March 19, 2010.
She has repeatedly faced accusations of membership in opposition groups, which she has steadfastly denied.
The Islamic Republic's security and judicial apparatus often make serious security charges against banned activists, leading to harsh punishments. This practice has prompted numerous criticisms from human rights organizations around the world./ VOA
