121 million seized by Amazon, suspected of major tax fraud

The financial police of Milan have seized 121 million euros for tax fraud against the Italian branch of Amazon. According to an investigation carried out by prosecutors Paolo Storari and Valentina Mondovì, the e-commerce giant also adopted an alleged "system" that had come to light, in other cases of logistics giants such as Dhl, Gls, Ups, Brt, Geodis, but also Uber, Lidl, Esselunga, Securitalia, Ups, Gs.

The investigation is focused on an alleged system through which large companies guarantee themselves "highly competitive rates" in the market by "leading" the work of cooperatives for their logistics services, consortia and "filter" companies, "irregularly, with "labor exploitation".

The investigation by prosecutors attempted to reconstruct the 'labor supply chain', revealing that the working relationship with the client company would be 'protected' by 'filter' companies which in turn used various cooperative companies (companies 'tank' ) "who have systematically failed to pay VAT, as well as social security and welfare fees", as Milan prosecutor Marcello Viola writes in a note.

The investigative hypotheses are related, the Prosecutor's Office explains, to "a complex tax fraud stemming from the final beneficiary", i.e. Amazon Italy, "of the mechanism of illegal invoices for legally non-existent operations against the determination of fictitious procurement contracts for the supply of labor, contrary to the sectoral regulations, which has led to the issuance and consequently the use of false documents".
