Bad weather sweeps Greece, major flooding in Rhodes, major damage and 24-hour road closures

Rhodes since yesterday is experiencing the biggest flooding phenomenon in its history, after a huge storm hit behind Lemnos and the island.
According to the statements of the regional governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Chatzimarkos, the residents of Rhodes have had a very difficult night.
“Rhodes, last night had a disastrous night. Dozens of rescue operations had to be carried out in particularly difficult conditions. The island was helped with forces arriving from Athens on a special flight and a 112 message has been sent out since dawn stopping all movement.
Attention, the curfew is in effect for 24 hours. Damage recording will not begin until the phenomenon ends, for which the Meteorological Service is issuing the alert again this Sunday.
The state apparatus is on full alert and communication with the Ministry of Civil Defense is ongoing. There is extensive damage to the road network as well as to homes and businesses.
So far there are no reports of missing persons and the area that took the biggest hit, Ialyssos, is being monitored by EMAK. We repeat, a universal travel ban is in effect."
He added that a large part of the island's road network has suffered significant damage.
The mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Koliadis, speaking this morning at Open, said: “ The evening for the residents of Ialyssos in Rhodes was very difficult, as the 'Snow' has turned the roads into rivers and the water level has also risen. many, with the result that several cars were swept away by the water. Officials of the Rhodes Fire Department, the Civil Defense Service of the Municipality and the District, volunteers and many citizens who helped, fought a long battle until dawn to free people from their homes and from their cars stopped on the road and squares due to the large amount of rain on the island of Rhodes.
Today, Sunday, December 1, the forces have been reinforced with 35 firefighters with special vehicles and two life rafts, while the Civil Defense forces remain on the island.
The representative of the Fire Department, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, spoke to ERT about the damage caused by the advance of bad weather in all regions of the country.
As of early Sunday morning, as press representative Vasilios Vathrakogiannis reported, the Fire Department had received 600 calls for help in Rhodes alone, of which about 60 were for transporting trapped people to safer places and 200 for t answered the water.
In the early hours of Sunday, a message was sent from 112 that prohibits traffic on the island's road network, due to landslides and dangerous spots on the road network, especially in the northern part.
The regional governor of the South Aegean, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, stated that in many places the network "is not passable".
Specifically, the message said: " If you are in Ialyssos Rhodes, move away from underground and basement areas to higher ground due to flooding in the area. Follow the instructions of the authorities".
