Pope Leo responds to Trump: I don't want to get into a debate with him, I will continue to speak out against war
Pope Leo told Reuters on Monday that he plans to continue speaking out against the war, following a direct attack by US President Donald Trump on the head of the Church of 1.4 billion believers.
In comments made aboard the papal plane to Algiers, where he is embarking on a 10-day tour of four African countries, the Pope also stressed that the Christian message is being "misused."
“I don’t want to get into an argument with him,” Leo told Reuters. “I don’t think the message of the Gospel is meant to be misused in the way that it is being done by some.”
"I will continue to speak out strongly against war, seeking to promote peace, dialogue and multilateral relations between states to find just solutions to problems," he said.
“Many people are suffering in the world today,” the Pope added. “Many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to stand up and say there is a better way.”
