Operation "Midnight Hammer", US Chief of Staff gives chronology of US attack on Iran
General Dan Caine, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, has released details of the covert operation that struck Iran's nuclear facilities. The operation, codenamed "Midnight Hammer," involved B-2 bombers, US submarines and a series of deception tactics to evade Tehran's air defenses.
Here is the official chronology of the largest US military operation against Iran in decades:
The operation began on the night between Friday and Saturday. According to General Caine, the American B-2 bombers were launched from the US. Some headed west as a deception maneuver, while the rest flew quietly east, with minimal communication throughout the 18-hour flight.
17:00 ET – Attack by US submarine
A US submarine launched more than 24 Tomahawk missiles against infrastructure targets at the Isfahan nuclear complex in Iran.
Interference in Iranian airspace
US B-2s entered Iranian airspace accompanied by 4th and 5th generation fighter jets. The US used aerial decoys and deceptive maneuvers to evade Iranian radar and missile systems.
Presentation of the targets – Natanz and Fordo
According to Caine, shortly before the strikes on the Natanz and Fordow facilities, special weapons were used to suppress Iranian air defenses to ensure the safe passage of the B-2 bombers.
18:40 ET – Direct Attack
The lead B-2 bomber dropped two large bunker-buster bombs (GBU-57) on the Fordow complex.
18:40–19:05 ET – Coordinated Strikes
The other bombers dropped their bombs on the remaining targets – Natanz and Isfahan. In total, 16 super-destructive bombs were dropped: 2 on Fordow and 14 on the other two facilities.
This corresponds to around 2:10 a.m. local time in Iran on Sunday.
After the attack ended, American forces withdrew towards the U.S. General Caine said there were no shots fired from the Iranian side, either during the entry or the return.
Technical balance of operation "Midnight Hammer":
16 GBU-57 "Massive Ordnance Penetrators" bombs
