Celebrity chef Salt Bae files for bankruptcy, posts record losses

Salt Bae's restaurant, a favorite among influencers, recorded a loss of €6.38 million last year.

The celebrity chef, whose real name is Nusret Gokçe, is known for his price tag of thousands of euros for a steak and his signature salt sprinkling.

Although its flagship restaurant in London's Knightsbridge has hosted stars such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo and generated revenue of around €11.6 million, the company reported a significant loss for 2024.

The loss was the result of a revaluation of the company’s assets in the US, which cost it around 6.96 million euros. Since the US branch of “Nusr-Et” is fully owned by a British company, the devaluation of the assets directly affected the financial statements.

At its peak, the brand had seven restaurants across the U.S. However, Nusr-Et now has just two restaurants after closing a Beverly Hills restaurant earlier this year.

Closures have also followed in Dallas, Las Vegas, Boston and New York. The company told Restaurant Dive that it has shifted its focus to “international growth,” with openings planned in Mexico City and Ibiza.

Despite the huge losses, the company still has around €2.67 million in reserves, although this is a massive drop from €9.40 million last year.

Meanwhile, according to the restaurant's website, the "Giant Tomahawk" steak costs 731 euros, the rump steak 789 euros, and the special Japanese "Wagyu" beef costs 1.15 euros per gram.

Although the restaurant is a favorite among A-list celebrities, it has a poor rating of just 2.9 out of five on TripAdvisor.
