Tonight the clocks go back.

On the night between Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 03:00, the clocks will be turned back one hour, marking the transition from daylight saving time to standard time. The change will allow us to sleep an hour longer, but the afternoons will get darker earlier. Standard time will remain in effect until March 29, 2026, when daylight saving time will return. The main purpose of this change is to make more efficient use of natural light during the day and save energy by reducing artificial lighting.
In the fall, clocks are turned back an hour to accommodate the shorter days. However, experts warn that the time change affects sleep cycles and biological rhythms, causing fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings. For this reason, many researchers propose that daylight saving time be maintained year-round to avoid the stress of the six-month change.
The clock change was first applied in Europe during World War I to save energy, and was revived during World War II and the oil crisis of the 1970s. A 2001 European Union directive formalized the practice of changing clocks twice a year, in March and October.
However, for several years, the European Union has been discussing the abolition of this change, as studies show that the energy savings are minimal, while the impact on health is significant. In 2018, the European Commission proposed to ban the clock change, based on a public consultation in which 84% of citizens were in favor of its abolition. To date, the proposal has not yet received final approval from the Council and the European Parliament.
