BBC: Historic meeting, Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors hold talks in the US

The ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel are expected to hold talks in Washington today, in a meeting that is considered historic, as it is the first time in decades that representatives of the two countries have met face to face for direct negotiations, despite the lack of diplomatic relations between them, writes the BBC.
The rare talks, which are also expected to include top US diplomat Marco Rubio, come just days after efforts between the US and Iran to reach an agreement on the wider Middle East conflict failed.
According to diplomatic sources, the ambassadors will discuss the possibility of opening the way for direct talks at higher levels between the two countries.
On the other hand, Lebanese authorities have expressed their desire to first reach a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
However, Israel has rejected this option, insisting that the Iran-backed group must completely disarm. Hezbollah itself has rejected the idea of talks and stated that it will not honor any agreement.
The recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have had serious consequences for Lebanon.
According to data, more than a million people have been displaced, while over 2,000 people have lost their lives, including hundreds of women, children and health workers.
