Meta introduces "third-party chats" on WhatsApp for users in the EU

Meta has announced the launch of the new "third-party conversations" feature for WhatsApp users in the European Union, as part of obligations to comply with the interoperability requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

This feature will give WhatsApp users the ability to communicate with people who use other messaging apps, as long as these services are interoperable with the WhatsApp platform.

Over the coming months, WhatsApp will enable chats with users of the BirdyChat and Haiket apps, as the first partners involved in this process. Meta announced that the collaboration with these services is the result of more than three years of work together with European messaging companies and the European Commission, to create a solution that meets DMA standards, while maintaining privacy and security.

The feature will be available for both Android and iOS. Once the rollout in the EU begins, users will receive a notification in the Settings section, where they will find instructions on how to enable the option to connect to third-party apps.

Once registered, WhatsApp users will be able to send text messages, voice messages, photos, videos, and files through these chats.

Meta emphasizes that using the feature is optional, and users can turn it on or off at any time. The company also notes that interaction with other applications has been developed while maintaining end-to-end encryption (E2EE) and other high privacy standards “as much as possible.”
