US: Germany, an exemplary ally for defense spending

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday that he sees positive developments in defense spending in Germany and praised NATO allies for increasing their military budgets.

Speaking at a defense forum in California, Hegseth welcomed NATO's agreement to significantly increase defense spending in the coming years.

"Allies that serve as examples, such as Israel, South Korea, Poland, Germany increasingly, the Baltic states and others, will receive special treatment from us," he declared.

According to him, the United States expects similar contributions from other allies, and that those who fail to fulfill their obligations may face consequences.

The NATO agreement, reached in June – prompted by Russia's war in Ukraine and calls from US President Donald Trump – calls for member countries to spend at least 3.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on defense, plus 1.5 percent on defense-related projects, such as infrastructure.

By 2035, spending in this sector is expected to reach 5 percent of GDP, the highest figure since the Cold War.
