Before visiting China, Trump: I respect Xi Jinping very much! He also wants the Strait of Hormuz to be opened

US President Donald Trump has hailed his "great relationship" with Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of a meeting with him in Beijing this week.

"I respect him a lot, I hope he respects me too," Trump says.

Referring to his plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said Xi would "like to see that happen."

It is thought that Trump will use his trip this week to urge Xi to use his influence over Iran to force it to make concessions.

However, the US-Israeli war against Iran and the resulting impact on the Strait of Hormuz has threatened China's energy security, causing a strain on US-China relations.
