Chaos in Turkish opposition party, police enter headquarters

High tensions and chaotic scenes were recorded at the headquarters of the Republican People's Party (CHP) in Ankara, following the decision of the 36th Political Department of the Court of Appeals to remove the chairman Özgür Özel from office. The situation degenerated into clashes between Özel's supporters and supporters of former leader Kemal Kilicdaroğlu, while the entrances to the building were blocked and hard objects and water bottles were thrown at the crowd. Kilicdaroğlu's lawyer, Celal Çelik, was also outside the headquarters, along with a group of supporters who sought to enter the building, but claimed that they were not allowed in by the party's security.

After tensions escalated, police forces intervened at the CHP headquarters, breaking through barricades set up by the building's security. During the police operation, pepper spray was also reportedly used to disperse the crowd.

The intervention came after Kemal Kilicdaroglu's lawyer sent the authorities an official request to evacuate the building, arguing that the court's decision should be implemented immediately. In a public statement, Kilicdaroglu called on all CHP structures, security forces and state institutions to respect the court's decision and avoid actions that conflict with party discipline, warning of measures against anyone who disobeys the orders.

On the other hand, Özgür Özel refused to leave the headquarters and through a video on social networks described the situation as an “attack on the legacy of Ataturk and the CHP”. He stated that the police had come to “occupy the building”, while adding that his supporters would not use violence against the security forces. The imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, also reacted to the dramatic developments, and through a post called for political mobilization against those who, according to him, “are tied to the chair and power”. The internal clash in the CHP is being considered one of the most serious political crises that has engulfed the Turkish opposition in recent years.
