Canada avoids election, Carney survives as budget passes by narrow margin

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's government survived a confidence vote on Monday, narrowly approving the budget he presented to revive the Canadian economy in the face of the threat of U.S. tariffs.
The support of some opposition MPs who wanted to prevent early elections allowed the budget to be passed and keep Carney in power.
The majority of elected MPs supported the government's proposed budget plan, thanks to the support of the Green Party leader and the absence of several members of other opposition parties from the vote. The total vote was 170 to 168.
The vote allows the government to proceed with a budget that promised tens of billions in additional spending on commercial infrastructure, defense and housing, while also promising to shrink the public sector.
In the April election, Carney's Liberal Party failed to win a majority of the 343 seats in the House of Commons, meaning the government needs the help of some opposition lawmakers to pass legislation. Some votes — including those on the budget — are considered confidence votes, which usually trigger the government's resignation and an election if they fail.
By Monday, the government was still seeking two opposition votes. Carney then won the support of the Green Party's only MP in Parliament, Elizabeth May, who has led the party for most of the past two decades.
May told reporters she had decided to support the budget after Carney promised her he was committed to the Paris Agreement targets on carbon emissions. “I will vote yes – for the country, for the planet and for my hope for the future,” she said.
Carney's budget projects an additional $167.3 billion in overall deficits over five years, driven by heavy spending on capital projects but also by a softer outlook for tax revenues. That's due to a previous income tax cut and weaker economic growth as Canada's export-oriented economy faces tariffs from the United States and China.
