Devastating earthquake in the Philippines, the death toll rises to 41, the battle continues under the rubble for the missing

The death toll from a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the Philippines has risen to at least 41 people, with more than 450 injured, according to provincial sources cited by AFP. Rescue teams are continuing to search for people trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in the city of General Santos, one of the areas hardest hit by the strong tremors.
According to local authorities, at least two people have been pulled alive from the rubble, while another has been found dead. There are still reports of missing people. The earthquake was felt strongly on the island of Mindanao and caused building collapses, damage to infrastructure and power outages in some areas. Debris, downed power lines and significant material damage were reported on the roads.
Witnesses and relatives of the missing are experiencing moments of anxiety as rescue teams continue to work in difficult conditions to reach those trapped. Philippine emergency authorities are inspecting damaged buildings and have set up relief structures for the injured. Many patients have been transferred to field hospitals due to damage to health infrastructure.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded more than 20 aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.7, adding to the fear of residents and forcing many of them to spend the night outside their homes.
The Philippines is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," one of the world's most active seismic zones, where earthquakes are frequent and often devastating. The quake comes just months after another deadly event in the country killed dozens, reigniting concerns about disaster preparedness in the region.
