Germany reinstates military service

Germany's ruling coalition has approved a new plan for military service after months of disagreements between political forces. The plan calls for all 18-year-old boys to fill out a form on their willingness to serve and undergo a medical check-up from 2027.

The aim is to increase the number of German army troops, currently around 182,000 soldiers, by adding 20,000 next year and reaching between 255,000 and 260,000 in the next decade, with an additional 200,000 reservists.

The decision comes as Berlin aims to create the most powerful conventional army in Europe, at a time when defense officials warn of potential risks, including a Russian attack within four years, according to General Carsten Breuer.

The service will initially be voluntary, but lawmakers are expected to vote on the plan by the end of 2025. Some left-wing parties and many young Germans oppose compulsory service: a poll by Stern magazine shows that 63% of young people aged 18-29 are against it.
